Long-haired Rabbit Dachshund — size comparison — facts and sources

The Long-haired Rabbit Dachshund is the smallest size of long-haired Dachshund. It has an elongated body, short legs and a narrow head with hanging ears. Soft hair forms feathering on the ears, underside and tail. The small body remains strong and athletic. Dachshund sizes are distinguished by chest circumference rather than height alone.

Dachshunds originated in Germany from scent hounds selected for underground work. The rabbit size was developed for narrower burrows and smaller quarry. Long-haired dogs share a history with other varieties, also used for tracking above ground. The German Dachshund club, founded in 1888, played an important role in organising different sizes and coat types.

This Dachshund is usually curious, affectionate with familiar people and highly persistent. It enjoys household activities, but an interesting scent may absorb its attention outdoors. It can boldly investigate new places and firmly seek what it wants. It quickly recognises routines and its owner’s responses. Attachment accompanies considerable independence in everyday decisions.
