The semi-long-coated Pyrenean Shepherd is a small, lightly built dog with very lively expressions. Body hair is less abundant than in longhaired members of the breed, and the cheeks have shorter hair. An agile outline, watchful eyes and quick movements suggest a dog always ready for action. Beneath the somewhat tousled coat are capable muscles and considerable endurance.
It worked on pastures and farms in the Pyrenees. Local dogs long differed between valleys because they were selected for particular conditions and shepherds' needs. The first official standard was developed during 1921–1925 under Bernard Sénac-Lagrange. The semi-long coat is one hair variant within a breed with a shared working history shaped by mountain flock herding.
It is very lively, inventive and strongly attached to its handler. It quickly notices movement, picks up small gestures and often reacts before a person gives a clear command. It can find solutions independently and remain engaged in interesting tasks for a long time. It can be cautious in new relationships while showing great willingness to cooperate with someone close.
