The long-haired Pyrenean Sheepdog is a small, light dog with an animated outline and tousled hair. Longer hair forms a beard, moustache and fringe, while body hair may be straight or slightly wavy. Beneath the abundant coat is a lean, highly agile body. Its lively face and quick movements reflect its temperament.
It worked on Pyrenean pastures and farms. Dogs from different valleys varied in appearance because flock skills long mattered more than a uniform standard. The first official standard was developed in 1921–1925 under Bernard Sénac-Lagrange. The shared standard covers long and semi-long coats.
It is lively, inventive and strongly bonded to its handler. It watches movement closely, reacts quickly to change and readily tackles tasks requiring agility. It can use its own initiative rather than mechanically await instructions. It may be reserved with strangers, and its close human bond often appears in attentive observation of its owner's gestures and behaviour.
