The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Pyrenean Mastiff is an enormous, strongly built dog with a dense white coat and coloured patches. Darker head markings form a pronounced mask. It has a broad chest, strong legs and a large, feathered tail. Its appearance is imposing, but movement should remain free and efficient, important during long periods alongside flocks.
It accompanied shepherds in the Spanish Pyrenees, protecting sheep against wolves and bears. It stayed close to livestock during movements between pastures as well. Smaller herding dogs directed the flock, while the Mastiff provided security. This division of labour reinforced great strength, resilience and independent judgement without constant human commands.
With those close to it, it is usually calm and gentle, enjoying familiar surroundings. It watches newcomers more carefully and may keep its distance. It can remain motionless for a long time monitoring events, then react decisively if concerned. Independence is apparent in its decisions; attachment to its owner does not always mean an immediate response to every signal.
