The Pug is a small, stocky dog with a broad head, a short muzzle and large dark eyes. It has a smooth coat, small folded ears and a tail tightly curled over the back. Fawn dogs have a distinct black mask and ears; black dogs also occur. The compact outline and facial expression make the breed recognisable.
The Pug comes from China and a long tradition of small companion dogs. Maritime trade brought it to Europe, where it became particularly popular in the Netherlands before also appearing at the British court. European breeding established the modern appearance. Its history has long centred on companionship rather than a particular farm or hunting task.
Pugs are generally cheerful and sociable and enjoy family life. They appreciate resting together but can also invite play energetically. They quickly notice opportunities for attention and may be inventive in seeking it. Preferences can be firm and reactions expressive. With familiar people, they are often demonstratively affectionate and seek frequent close contact.
