The Pudelpointer is a strong pointing dog with a rough coat, pronounced beard and dense eyebrows. Its coat is generally brown in various shades and closely protects the body. It has drooping ears, strong legs and a deep chest. In movement it appears enduring and springy, without heaviness that would impede prolonged searches.
The breed was developed in Germany from the Poodle and Pointer, combining dogs with different specialities. The aim was a versatile helper for field, woodland and water work. Successive generations were selected for abilities and an established type, making the Pudelpointer a separate breed. Its name therefore describes historical ancestry rather than any present-day cross between these two dogs.
The Pudelpointer is usually composed with people and becomes deeply engaged once an activity begins. It enjoys searching terrain and investigating scents while remaining cooperative with its handler. It can sustain concentration despite obstacles and changing surroundings. A pronounced hunting instinct also appears outside hunting: a moving bird or fresh trail can readily become its most important concern.
