The Portuguese Sheepdog has an elongated, agile body and a long coat forming a beard, moustache and eyebrows. The hair gives it a naturally tousled appearance, particularly on the head. Despite the abundant coat it remains light-moving and very nimble. Bright eyes and expressive features clearly convey its interest in people and its surroundings.
The Cão da Serra de Aires developed as a shepherd's helper on Portugal's Alentejo plains. It worked with sheep as well as cattle, horses, goats and pigs. It could keep livestock within a designated area and find animals that had strayed from the group. The breed's name retains its connection with the Serra de Aires range, and its history demonstrates the versatility of the former farm dog.
It is very lively, intelligent and deeply engaged in cooperation. It enjoys tasks requiring quick responses and watches its handler's gestures attentively while learning. It forms a strong bond with those close to it but may be cautious with strangers. Alertness particularly increases when unusual events occur nearby. Its activity is often cheerful and enthusiastic, evident in both play and work.
