The Portuguese Pointer is a strongly built dog with a broad head, short coat and fairly compact body. Drooping ears lie against its cheeks, and gentle eyes give its face a friendly expression. Its coat includes shades of yellow, often with white markings. It is more sturdy than many slender pointing dogs but retains the agility needed for field work.
The breed comes from Portugal's bird-hunting tradition. Its local name, Perdigueiro, refers to partridges. The dog's task was to search the ground, find birds and stop to indicate their position to the hunter. Breeding reinforced both scenting abilities and close contact with the handler. This cooperation became one of the Portuguese Pointer's distinguishing features among continental pointing dogs.
It is usually very affectionate towards its owner and readily shows attachment. It is interested in its surroundings but often checks where its human companion is. In action it combines liveliness with persistence and can maintain concentration for a long time once engaged in a task. It can be assertive with other dogs, especially when deeply involved in its activity.
