The Wirehaired Portuguese Podengo Pequeno has a light, elongated body, large erect ears and a harsh coat. Hair on the muzzle forms a small beard, and dark eyes give it a bright expression. Short legs allow it to move efficiently among stones and dense vegetation. It is one variety of the Podengo, a family comprising three sizes and two coat types.
The Portuguese Podengo descends from old hunting dogs of the Iberian Peninsula. Different sizes were established according to the work performed. Small dogs searched for rabbits in crevices and hiding places, and from the fifteenth century were also chosen to control rodents on Portuguese caravels. The wirehaired variety shares its origins with the smooth-haired variety, differing chiefly in its coat.
The Pequeno is lively, alert and very interested in its surroundings. It eagerly investigates corners, responds to rustling and quickly chases moving targets. At home it can be an affectionate, playful companion. It nevertheless retains its initiative: in a new place it often follows a route of its own choosing, combining attentive listening with sniffing and watching.
