Medium Smooth-haired Portuguese Podengo — size comparison — facts and sources
The medium smooth-haired Portuguese Podengo has a light, capable build, a wedge-shaped head and large erect ears. Hair lies close, making musculature clearly visible. The tail is carried freely and rises when animated. A wire-haired version also exists, both retaining a similar build.
The Podengo descends from Portugal's hunting-dog tradition. Long selection for local terrain and different tasks established three sizes. The medium size was particularly linked to rabbit hunting. Dogs could work alone or in groups, searching scrub and rocky places. Utility in the Portuguese landscape shaped their breeding.
It is lively, alert and independent. Scent interest combines with rapid detection of movement and sounds. It readily explores new places and can decisively chase a fleeing animal. In familiar surroundings it may stay close to people and signal unfamiliar noises or visitors by voice. Its attention readily shifts between its handler and nearby events.
