The Porcelaine is a French scent hound with short white hair and orange markings. Thin, drooping ears and a dark nose stand out against the pale head. Its build is strong yet light in appearance: long legs and a deep chest support sustained movement. Its porcelain-inspired name aptly describes the shine of its smooth coat.
The breed is associated with Franche-Comté in eastern France and was formerly named after that region. It developed for pack hunting, selecting dogs able to follow scent consistently. A carrying voice and cooperation with other hounds were also important.
It can be gentle and affectionate with people. Going outdoors can transform its behaviour: it lowers its nose, examines successive trails and visibly livens at fresh scent. Independence plays a major role at such moments.
