The common house martin is a small swallow with a glossy dark back and white underparts. Its distinctive white rump helps distinguish it from the barn swallow.
It obtains most of its food in flight, catching small insects. It often feeds above buildings and water. It collects lumps of wet mud to build an almost enclosed nest with a small entrance.
It attaches its nests beneath the eaves of buildings, sometimes close to other pairs. European birds are seasonal migrants and spend the winter in Africa. Small feathers produce the white covering on the legs and toes.
