The Toy Poodle is the smallest size variety of Poodle but retains the proportions and springy movement of its larger relatives. It has a slender muzzle, long drop ears and a dense, curly coat. Grooming can greatly change its appearance, from clearly defined curls to a shorter, even trim. Under the FCI standard, Toy, Miniature, Medium and Standard are four sizes of one breed.
Poodles share a history as waterfowl retrievers related to the Barbet. The French name caniche derives from a word for a duck. The breeds gradually became distinct, and breeders developed Poodles in different sizes and colours. Smaller varieties became popular companions while retaining an aptitude for learning and working with people.
Toy Poodles are usually lively, observant and closely attached to their people. They learn sequences, recognise household routines and find their own ways to attract attention. Searching games, retrieving and tricks reveal their inventiveness. Sensitivity to tone of voice and the surrounding atmosphere often accompanies their quick intelligence.
