Polish Lowland Sheepdog (PON) — size comparison — facts and sources

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, also known as the PON, is a medium-sized dog with a strong, slightly elongated body. Long, dense hair forms a beard, moustache and fringe often covering the eyes. Drop ears almost disappear in the abundant coat. It moves nimbly and freely, responding quickly to surrounding events.

It descends from farm dogs helping drive livestock on Poland's lowlands. Their tasks required careful observation, rapid reactions and contact with the shepherd. The PON retained a tradition distinct from the large Tatra Sheepdog, whose main role was flock protection. The acronym, also used abroad, simply comes from the initials of its full Polish breed name.

The PON is alert, lively and has a good memory. It readily remembers household routines and situations that previously attracted attention. It may be affectionate with familiar people and eager to join activities while first assessing strangers from a distance. It can have its own opinions and does not immediately abandon a chosen activity.
