The Poitevin is a tall, slender French hound with short tricoloured hair. It has long legs, a deep chest and a relatively light head with hanging ears. Its build combines strength and lightness for sustained running. Movement is energetic and free, allowing a fast pace over distance.
It developed in western France and takes its name from Poitou. Bred for pack hunting across extensive country, it was selected for scenting ability, endurance and prolonged pursuit of game.
Keenly interested in scent and exploration, it can choose a direction, recover a trail and persist independently. Activity among other dogs is familiar, and their excitement may further encourage it. It can be quieter at rest, but going outdoors quickly releases its energy. Persistence and sustained attention to searching are characteristic.
