The Podenco Canario is slender and long-legged with short hair and very large erect ears. It has an elongated muzzle, distinct musculature and a light body. Red-and-white colouring is common. Its appearance closely relates to capability: it moves freely among stones and dense vegetation.
It originates in the Canary Islands, where it has long helped locate rabbits hiding in rock crevices, stone walls and volcanic passages. Dogs also hunted alongside ferrets. This local tradition is well described; stories of an uninterrupted lineage from ancient Egyptian dogs remain much less certain.
It is energetic, persistent and strongly interested in its surroundings. When searching it uses hearing and smell, carefully examining places invisible to people. It can work with great commitment for a long time while showing strong attachment to familiar people. Independence is especially visible when it detects movement or game scent among rocks.
