The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Plott Hound has a muscular, capable body, drooping ears and a short coat, often with distinctive brindling. Shades vary considerably, from lighter reddish-brown to very dark. Long legs and a light stride allow quick movement over uneven terrain. It is strong while retaining the slenderness and nimbleness needed by an active hound.
It bears the name of the Plott family, who developed the breed in North Carolina. Its history is linked to German tracking dogs brought to America and subsequent breeding for local hunting. These dogs were used for game including bears and wild boar. Selection focused on endurance, courage and following scent in difficult terrain, giving the breed a distinctly working character.
At home the Plott can be calm, affectionate and closely bonded with people. In new surroundings it becomes very attentive, and an interesting trail quickly prompts action. It is quick to learn and confident but readily makes its own decisions. It may remain reserved with strangers. Its determination appears in prolonged concentration on a task despite obstacles or changing conditions.
