The Phu Quoc Ridgeback has a lean, muscular body, erect ears and a short coat. Its most distinctive feature is a ridge along the back where hair grows in the opposite direction to the rest of the body. Colours include black, fawn and brindle. Its movement is free, and its build allows efficient running and obstacle crossing.
It comes from Vietnam's Phú Quốc island, where local dogs accompanied people and helped hunt. Modern breeding establishes this regional type, described by the Vietnamese canine organisation. Ridgeback dogs from different world regions can look similar, but the details of their historical connections are not fully understood. A shared coat feature alone does not establish a single route of ancestry.
The Phú Quốc is usually attached to its family, active and attentive to its surroundings. It enjoys investigating new places using both nose and eyes. Quickly spotting a small animal may trigger immediate pursuit. Shared activities interest it, but it initiates many actions independently. Its agility also appears in readily climbing obstacles and seeking different approaches.
