The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Pharaoh Hound has a slender body, long neck and very large upright ears. Its short coat is reddish, and adult eyes are amber. Nose and eye rims also have warm tones. A deep chest accompanies long legs and a fine tail. The build supports fast running and agile movement across stony ground.
Despite its name, the modern breed comes from Malta, where it is called kelb tal-fenek, or rabbit dog. Hunters valued its use of sight, smell and hearing to locate quarry in rocky shelters. Resemblance to dogs in ancient images contributed to the later English name but does not prove continuous breeding since the pharaohs.
It is usually lively, watchful and affectionate with familiar people. It enjoys games, and interesting movement immediately captures attention. It can act independently and persist strongly towards a goal. At home it often rests calmly and seeks family contact. It may initially keep its distance from new people. Reactions are quick, and emotions are often vocal.
