The Petit Bleu de Gascogne resembles its larger Gascon relative, retaining long ears and a ticked coat with a bluish shade. It is, however, lighter and smaller. It has a strong body, long head and free movement. “Petit” describes size relative to its close relative, rather than a miniature dog.
The breed arose through selection of smaller Gascon hounds. Reduced size chiefly reflected working requirements: dogs were intended for smaller game, particularly hares. They retained the southern French tradition of pack work and remained working dogs selected for a specific hunting method.
The Petit Bleu is usually affectionate and calm with familiar people. It readily cooperates with other dogs and shows keen interest in scents during searches. It can examine terrain methodically and remain concentrated on a trail for a long time. A ringing voice signals the search’s progress.
