The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a low, rough-coated dog with an elongated body and strong legs. It has hanging ears, a pronounced beard and an active tail. Harsh, somewhat tousled hair creates a natural country-dog appearance. Compact and athletic, it can push through dense vegetation with enduring, purposeful movement.
It descends from the hounds of Vendée in western France, developed for small game, particularly rabbits in scrub. The region’s small and large bassets formerly shared a standard, differing chiefly in height. A separate description helped establish more balanced proportions in the smaller breed. The name identifies size, short legs, rough hair and region of origin.
It is usually cheerful, bold and highly interested in scents. It may choose a route independently and follow one trail for a long time. Often friendly with people, it enjoys play and expresses emotions clearly. Its voice can be loud, especially when excited. Sociability coexists with determination: it often returns to its own idea despite an alternative suggestion.
