The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Pekingese is a small dog, heavy for its height, with a broad head and a very short muzzle. It has powerful forequarters, short legs and a full neck ruff. Long hair also covers the ears and the tail carried over the back. The characteristic rolling gait follows from its body and limb structure.
The breed is associated with China’s tradition of small companion dogs, including those kept at the imperial court. Its name comes from the former Western name for Beijing. After dogs reached Europe, pedigree breeding helped spread them far beyond China. The abundant coat and lionlike appearance were valued within the palace tradition of canine companionship.
Pekingese usually become strongly attached to familiar people while remaining distinctly independent. They choose when to make contact and do not necessarily accept every suggestion readily. They can be brave and confident, yet reserved with strangers. At home they may accompany their owner quietly while watching events closely. When seeking attention they can be firm, despite their unhurried movement.
