The Patterdale Terrier is small and strongly built with a powerful head and short coat. Hair may be smooth, rough or intermediate, with slight facial furnishings. Black dogs are common, but other colours occur. Appearance varies between lines because working capability long mattered most in breeding.
It originates in northern England's working-terrier tradition in the Lake District. Its name refers to Patterdale village. The dogs assisted hunts around animal retreats, including difficult rocky terrain. Selection chiefly favoured courage, persistence and task performance rather than uniform show appearance. This working ancestry remains highly important in describing the population.
It is very active and readily engages in activities that arouse curiosity. It can investigate one scent or corner for a long time and act independently. Small-animal movement may provoke a strong chase response. With people it can be affectionate and eager for shared tasks.
