The Parson Russell Terrier is a small, springy dog with fairly long legs and predominantly white hair. Its coat may be smooth, rough or broken, with darker head and body markings. It is lighter and taller than the shorter-legged Jack Russell. A narrow body aids passage through tight gaps, while long legs support fast running.
It descends from terriers bred by nineteenth-century clergyman and hunter John Russell. They accompanied hunts and worked at fox earths. Different types with this ancestry long shared the Jack Russell name. Later breeding separated the taller Parson, retaining emphasis on working traits distinct from heavier show terriers.
It is energetic, curious and highly persistent. It readily explores, investigates crevices, digs and chases moving objects. With people it often shows openness and enthusiasm for shared play. It can nevertheless focus so intensely on its own goal that other stimuli temporarily lose their interest.
