The Papillon is a small, lightly built dog with large upright ears fringed with long hair. Their butterfly-like outline gives this variety its French name. Its silky coat is white with coloured patches, and a plumed tail lies over the back. A refined head, dark eyes and springy movement complete its lively appearance.
It belongs to the Continental Toy Spaniels familiar from European court portraits, including Renaissance paintings. Drop-eared dogs, now called Phalène, were once more common. Upright-eared Papillons and drop-eared Phalènes remain varieties of the same breed, rather than separate breeds with different purposes.
Papillons often engage readily with people and activities. Active, quick to learn and attentive to subtle human signals, they enjoy games and new tasks. They may also sound the alarm emphatically when something changes. In familiar surroundings, bold curiosity and short bursts of energy alternate with close companionship.
