The Otterhound is a large scent hound with powerful feet, a broad nose and long folded ears. Dense, harsh hair creates a tousled appearance, with a beard emphasising its large muzzle. Underfur is useful during water work. Despite its heavy outline, it can move freely and persistently for long periods.
The breed developed in Britain for otter hunting. River-working dogs had to follow scent along banks, enter water and recover trails ashore. They worked in packs, with voices helping hunters follow the pursuit. After this hunting practice disappeared, enthusiasts’ breeding chiefly preserved the Otterhound.
It is usually outgoing, cheerful and relaxed with people. It may appear unhurried at home, but an interesting scent quickly prompts action. It enjoys exploration, and water often attracts it as much as ground trails. Independence is especially apparent when scenting absorbs its attention.
