The Old English Sheepdog, also called the Bobtail, is a large, powerful dog almost entirely hidden beneath dense, shaggy hair. Abundant hair also covers the head and legs. A frequent white-and-grey combination makes its front appear lighter than its rear. Characteristic body rolling is visible in movement, particularly at a slow walk.
It developed in Britain among dogs helping move livestock. Their task was keeping herds together and driving them between grazing areas or to market. The popular name Bobtail means a short tail and refers to historical docking. Today's show appearance is much more elaborate than the practical coat of working farm dogs.
It is generally sociable, lively and strongly interested in household members. It enjoys shared play, can be demonstrative and readily attracts attention. It also retains vigilance, and its loud voice is noticeable. During play it moves energetically and reacts quickly to nearby events.
