Norwich Terrier — size comparison — facts and sources

The Norwich Terrier has a small, strong body, short legs and erect, pointed ears. Its harsh coat is fuller around the neck, forming distinct eyebrows and a short beard on the head. Dark eyes and raised ears give it a highly alert expression. Its compact build combines hardiness with considerable agility.

It descends from small farm dogs of eastern England used for rodent control and hunting. Erect- and drop-eared terriers were bred together for years. After the British Kennel Club separated them in 1964, Norwich remained the name for erect-eared dogs and Norfolk for drop-eared ones. Their shared ancestry remains clear in both breeds' appearance.

The Norwich is usually lively, affectionate and eager for close contact. It enjoys shared play but can be equally absorbed by a rustle in grass or a scent in a crevice. It is courageous and persistent, engaging wholeheartedly in a task. It often finds something worth investigating before its owner suggests an activity.
