The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Grey Norwegian Elkhound is a compact, strong spitz with erect ears and a tightly curled tail. Its dense coat is grey, with darker hair tips and a distinctly darkened muzzle. It has a broad chest, strong legs and an almost square body. An abundant coat protects it in cold weather, while its build allows sustained movement through woodland.
It descends from Norwegian dogs used to track and hold large game at bay, especially moose. The dog located the animal, stayed nearby and indicated its position to the hunter by barking. This required both courage and an ability to avoid dangerous contact. The Norwegian name 'elghund' means a dog for moose, recalling the breed's principal working purpose.
The Elkhound is usually energetic, confident and persistent. It bonds strongly with those close to it but can follow its own intentions when exploring. It enjoys investigating scents and watches movement attentively, often commenting on nearby events by barking. At home it can be cheerful and sociable. Cooperation with people goes hand in hand with readiness to make independent decisions.
