Black Norwegian Elkhound — size comparison — facts and sources
The Black Norwegian Elkhound is a relatively small, compact spitz with a glossy black coat. It has upright, pointed ears and a tail tightly curled over its back. Lighter and more finely built than the grey Elkhound, it retains strong legs and considerable agility. Its dense coat lies close enough to keep its outline clearly visible.
It developed in Norway’s tradition of dogs tracking large game, particularly elk. Selection valued a good nose, courage and the ability to cross difficult forest terrain. It has its own breeding history and separate standard, establishing features distinct from the grey Elkhound.
It is energetic, alert and persistent. It can cooperate attentively with its handler while retaining initiative when exploring. Interesting scents readily capture its attention, and in unfamiliar places it eagerly investigates beyond its immediate surroundings. It acts confidently and usually persists in examining whatever attracts it.
