The Norrbottenspets is a small, lightly built dog with large erect ears and a tail curled over its back. Its short, dense coat is usually white with red or yellowish patches. It has an attentive expression and an agile, nimble outline. Its appearance may suggest a companion dog, but its build retains the features of a working hunting spitz.
It comes from northern Sweden, where small dogs helped obtain game for food and fur. As this livelihood declined after the Second World War, breeding nearly disappeared and the breed was considered extinct. Dogs were nevertheless found still living on remote farms. Their descendants enabled the population to be restored, and it returned to the Swedish register in 1967.
The Norrbottenspets is courageous, energetic and attentive to its surroundings. Scents, sounds and movement in vegetation readily arouse its interest. It can work independently and often expresses excitement vocally. With those close to it, it is usually cheerful and open. It enjoys exploring new places, and interesting trails can hold it for a long time in one patch of ground.
