The Norfolk Terrier is a small, stocky dog with a harsh coat and short legs. Its ears fold forwards, providing the easiest distinction from the closely related Norwich Terrier. It has a strong muzzle, dark eyes and a compact outline. Rough hair gives it a natural, somewhat tousled appearance, especially around the head and neck.
Both breeds descend from small terriers of eastern England. These dogs helped control rodents and took part in hunting, also working in animals' hiding places. Initially, dogs with erect and drooping ears were registered together. In 1964 the British Kennel Club separated them, giving the name Norfolk to the drop-eared variety. Their shared history explains their great similarity apart from this feature.
The Norfolk is generally bold, sociable and curious about its surroundings. It enjoys playing with people, quickly investigates new places and responds to sounds. It can be persistent when interested, particularly if a scent's source is underground or in an inaccessible corner. Within the family it usually shows considerable affection, combining a desire for company with independent exploration.
