The American horseshoe crab is a marine chelicerate, more closely related to arachnids than to crabs. It spends most of its life near the bottom but comes onto sandy shores to breed. The female partly buries herself in the sand and lays successive batches of eggs.
On Delaware Bay shores, the eggs provide abundant food for migratory shorebirds. The birds replenish their energy reserves there before continuing north. After hatching, the young head into shallow water. They resemble adults and grow through successive moults, gradually also using areas farther offshore.
