Ruby seadragon — size comparison — facts and sources
The ruby seadragon is a seahorse relative discovered through re-examination of museum material. Anatomical and DNA analysis led to its description in 2015. Only a later expedition filmed living animals in their natural habitat.
The first observations occurred in 2016 near the Recherche Archipelago off western Australia, at depths exceeding fifty metres. Film confirmed the absence of leaflike appendages known in other seadragons. It belongs to the pipefish family. Few observations limit knowledge of everyday behaviour.
