European spiny lobster — size comparison — facts and sources

The European spiny lobster inhabits rocky seabeds in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. It usually leaves its shelter at night to search for food. It eats molluscs, echinoderms and other bottom-dwelling organisms. Studies have described returns to previously used shelters. Crevices protect it from predators and are particularly important after moulting.

The female cares for eggs carried beneath her abdomen before the larvae begin a planktonic stage. In parts of southwestern Britain it disappeared locally following exploitation in the twentieth century, with clearer signs of recovery emerging only many years later.
