Blue crab — size comparison — facts and sources

The blue crab inhabits western Atlantic coastal waters, using bays and estuaries with salinity changing according to freshwater input. An opportunistic omnivore, it eats bivalves, other crustaceans, dead fish and plant and animal material, sometimes including its own species.

Males accompany females before their final moult and remain after mating while the new shell is soft. Females move towards saltier waters to release larvae. Young return to bays after successive developmental transformations.
