Red king crab — size comparison — facts and sources

The red king crab searches for food on the seabed. It eats bivalves, worms, echinoderms, other crustaceans and fish, among other foods. Diet changes with body size: large individuals can crush prey with their claws that smaller ones cannot tackle.

The young use sheltered, complex habitats that reduce the risk of being eaten by fish and other crabs. Older juveniles may form large aggregations, resting together by day and feeding at night. Adults move between feeding and breeding sites.

Growth is possible only through moulting. For a time after shedding its shell the crab remains soft and particularly vulnerable to attack. The female carries eggs, while newly hatched larvae initially live in open water before settling on the bottom.
