Coconut crab — size comparison — facts and sources

The coconut crab spends its adult life on land on tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean islands. In many places it emerges after dark, when drying out and heat are easier to avoid. It may spend the day and moulting period in a burrow or rock crevice. Climbing also allows access to resources above ground.

It eats various fruits, seeds, carrion and animals it encounters. It can carry large food pieces to its shelter. Adults do not carry shells, although young animals use empty snail shells for a time after completing the marine developmental stage.

Reproduction still ties it to the ocean. The female approaches the shore and releases eggs that hatch into planktonic larvae. This stage enables dispersal between islands; adult crabs do not make sea crossings.
