The Kooikerhondje is a small, lightly built dog with a white-and-red coat and a long, richly feathered tail. Black fringes known as earrings adorn its drooping ears. It has a gentle expression, dark eyes and a springy stride. The coat is moderately long, straight or slightly wavy, so its outline remains clear despite decorative feathering on the legs.
The breed helped Dutch hunters lure ducks into water traps called eendenkooi. The dog appeared calmly between screens, and its moving tail aroused the birds' curiosity, encouraging them to swim in a chosen direction. In 1942 Baroness van Hardenbroek began restoring the rare population. A bitch named Tommy, found in Friesland, became one foundation of modern breeding.
The Kooikerhondje usually bonds strongly with its owner and responds attentively to their behaviour. It is lively and quick to learn but may first watch unfamiliar situations from a distance. It enjoys play with those close to it and can sustain concentration on an engaging task. Its sensitivity also makes it notice small changes in mood and surroundings. It does not immediately approach every new acquaintance with equal ease.
