The Murray River Retriever is a medium-sized, strongly built dog with a brown, curly coat. Hair on the muzzle and fronts of the legs is shorter and smoother, while curls cover the body, ears and tail. It has a broad head and slightly elongated outline. Its build and dense coat suit work in water and bankside vegetation.
It developed around Australia’s Murray River, chiefly as a wild-duck retriever. It accompanied people travelling and living along the river, including families associated with paddle-steamer transport. Its regional history and type remain distinct from the British Curly Coated Retriever. The Australian kennel organisation introduced an official breed standard from 2022.
It is friendly, curious and usually confident. It readily searches, retrieves objects and responds to encouragement. In unfamiliar places it often investigates scents and surroundings thoroughly first. It can work with intense concentration, then return to affectionate interaction with household members.
