The Mountain Cur is a medium-sized, muscular dog with a short coat and drooping ears. It has a fairly compact outline and legs that allow fast movement over uneven ground. Colours vary and include brindle, black and yellowish shades. Individual lines retain some diversity in appearance because working ability mattered most.
It descends from dogs of American settlers and farms. It helped hunt and guard property, with a particular speciality in finding game that took refuge in trees. In 1957 the Original Mountain Cur Breeders of America was formed to organise breeding and registration of local lines. The word 'cur' also appears in the names of other working dogs, but the Mountain Cur forms a distinct population.
It is active, courageous and deeply engaged in its chosen task. When searching it uses scent, sight and hearing, and may indicate a located animal with a strong voice. Initiative helps it solve tasks in woodland. It can cooperate readily with its handler, particularly when their shared activity gives it a concrete purpose.
