The Moscow Watchdog is large, broad-chested and strongly muscular. It has an abundant white-and-red coat, a darker mask and a broad head with drooping ears. It resembles some ancestors, particularly the Saint Bernard, but retains its own proportions and working type. Despite its powerful build it can move energetically.
The breed was developed in the fifties of the twentieth century at Moscow's military Krasnaya Zvezda kennel. The programme used breeds including Caucasian Shepherd Dogs, Saint Bernards and Russian Piebald Hounds. The aim was a resilient dog suited to guarding facilities and capable of cooperating with its handler. This breeding group's first description appeared in 1958, and continued selection established the breed's distinctiveness.
It is usually attached to household members and readily maintains contact. At the same time it takes a clear interest in events around its territory and can independently approach unfamiliar stimuli. It can be composed in familiar situations and more reserved with strangers. It quickly learns household routines and its owner's signals. Family attachment combines with readiness to react firmly when it considers this necessary.
