The Montenegrin Mountain Hound is a medium-sized dog with a short black-and-tan coat. It has a strong head, drooping ears and a compact, muscular body. Red markings above the eyes and on the muzzle brighten the dark coat. Its substantial outline remains agile enough for mountainous terrain.
It descends from Balkan hounds used around present-day Montenegro. It was sometimes formerly called simply the black hound. An initial standard was drawn up in 1924, and FCI officially recognised the breed in 1969 at a meeting in Warsaw. Recognition established a local hunting type while retaining its connection to tracking work.
It is described as steady, attached to its owner and willing to cooperate. During searches it can be persistent and independent but should not remain constantly excited. Its composure is more apparent in quiet surroundings.
