The western red colobus has a dark back and head with reddish limbs and flanks. It is a diurnal, tree-dwelling monkey living in groups containing both sexes. Older works also included populations now treated separately within this taxon.
Leaves form the basis of its diet, supplemented by young shoots, seeds and fruit. A multi-chambered stomach and its associated microorganisms help it use fibrous food. Long fingers aid branch grasping, while the thumb is greatly reduced. The tail helps maintain balance while moving through the forest.
