The rufous sengi has a sandy or reddish back, pale belly, large eyes and ears, and long, slender legs. It lives in dry, open habitats.
Its elongated, mobile nose locates invertebrates, including ants and termites. Available plant parts supplement the diet. It may occur alone or in pairs.
