The western tree hyrax has dense brownish-grey fur and a paler patch around a dorsal scent gland. Its ears and limbs are short and its tail externally invisible. Older tree-hyrax accounts do not always match current species boundaries.
It chiefly feeds at night on leaves, fruit, bark and other available plant parts, sometimes supplemented by small invertebrates. Often solitary, it also occurs in small family groups. Loud calls, especially after dark, provide important contact between individuals.
