The red-tailed monkey has a pale nose spot and white cheeks contrasting with its dark face. Its name refers to the reddish underside of the tail. Some characteristic markings develop gradually in the young. It is active by day and moves skilfully among branches.

Food searching often intensifies in the morning and late in the day. Social groups may meet at productive fruit trees or rest together. Fruit is an important dietary component, supplemented by leaves, insects, flowers and buds. Spacious cheek pouches allow it to carry food away and eat in a quieter place.
