Little pygmy possum — size comparison — facts and sources

The little pygmy possum has a fawn back, a grey belly, large eyes and rounded ears. Grasping feet and a prehensile tail help it move among thin shoots. It feeds mainly at night and spends the day in a sheltered nest.

It uses nectar and pollen from flowering plants but also obtains insects, spiders and other small animals. It holds food with its front paws and breaks it up with its teeth. When conditions turn cold or resources become scarce it can periodically reduce activity and metabolic rate. Such torpor helps save energy in a changing environment. Food distribution, especially that of seasonally flowering plants, influences space use.
