The brown antechinus is a small predatory marsupial with grey-brown fur, a pale belly and a pink nose. It eats beetles, spiders and other invertebrates, supplementing its diet with small vertebrates and plant food. It usually hunts at night, although during resource shortages it may also be active by day.
Resting arrangements change seasonally: in warmer periods individuals may use separate nests, gathering in shared retreats in the cold. Females rearing offspring remain more independent. Under unfavourable conditions the animal can temporarily reduce activity and energy expenditure.
