The Portuguese man-of-war is a colony of specialised zooids. A crested gas float holds it at the surface and allows wind-driven movement.
It lives chiefly in tropical and subtropical seas, carried by winds and currents. Tentacles hanging beneath the float bear stinging cells that subdue small fish and crustaceans. Different colony parts capture prey, digest food and reproduce.
